The Syracuse Orange rowing squads are pushing to secure their places in their respective championships. The Syracuse men are ranked in the top 10 in the latest IRA/US Rowing Coaches Poll and last weekend they captured the Packard Cup by defeating the Dartmouth Big Green. The previous week the Orange defeated the Cornell Big Red and Navy Midshipmen to secure the Goes Trophy and now the team will prepare for the Eastern Sprints on May 19th.
Last year the Syracuse 1st Varsity 8 boat was 7th at the Eastern Sprints and as a team the Orange finished 9th at the IRA Championships. This year’s IRA Championships will be held May 31- June 2 in Sacramento California.
The Syracuse women will be in Princeton this weekend for their final race before the ACC Championships. Syracuse holds the 20th ranking in the latest CRCA/US Rowing Coaches Poll and with the Virginia Cavaliers and Duke Blue Devils ahead of them in the rankings, the Orange will need a strong showing the next two races as they seek a return to the NCAA Championships.
With only sixteen teams earning NCAA invites Syracuse has some work to do to secure their place in the field. The Orange are in their 1st season under Head Coach Luke McGee and here’s a video where he talks about his coaching history and his philosophy for the Orange program.
