What’s the best buzzer-beater in Syracuse men’s basketball history?

Let’s discuss some clutch shots, shall we?

NCAA Basketball: Duke at Syracuse Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

After watching Kawhi Leonard lift the Toronto Raptors over the Philadelphia 76ers in Game seven on Sunday night, we got to wondering what’s the best buzzer beater in Syracuse Orange men’s basketball history? Before we get to the list though we’ll be clear that these are game-winning shots and at the final buzzer (or incredibly close to it).

Now onto the list (in no particular order)...

Tyler Ennis against the Pittsburgh Panthers in 2014

The shot which kept the Orange undefeated and quieted the Oakland Zoo.

John Gillon against the Duke Blue Devils in 2017

The highlight of a disappointing regular season for the Orange, as Gillon sent the Dome fans home happy and sealed his legacy during a brief stay on campus.

Gerry McNamara vs the Cincinnati Bearcats in the 2006 Big East Tournament

Pearl Washington against the Boston College Eagles in 1984

You’ve heard of walk-off home runs but what about “The Run-Off” here from Pearl.

Ryan Blackwell vs the St John’s Red Storm in the 1998 Big East Tournament Semi-Final

Syracuse lost in the final to UConn but Blackwell provided us with another great Big East Tournament memory.

Tyus Battle vs the Clemson Tigers-2017

The 2016-17 season at least gave us some dramatic moments.

Gerry McNamara vs the Georgetown Hoyas in 2004

Anytime you can rip the heart out of the Hoyas on their home floor is a special moment. Shout out to Craig Forth for being there for a tip but not interferring with the shot.

Michael Gbinije versus the Virginia Tech Hokies in 2015

Silent G with the sweet feet.

Honorable Mention to these other clutch shots in Syracuse history

Jason Cipolla and John Wallace against the Georgia Bulldogs in the 1996 NCAA Tournament

This inbounds pass is absolutely perfect.

How many coaches today would let their players just go like this?

It’s only half-time but this Elijah Hughes shot against Duke is always worth another look

And of course the buzzer beater that wasn’t (and wound up leading to the greatest college basketball game ever played), courtesy of Eric Devendorf

I remember some other game-winners that I couldn’t find video for like Conrad McRae and Terrence Roberts hitting improbable shots to win games. Feel free to include others that you remember in the comments.
