Syracuse Orange football scheduling news is upon us!
Granted, it’s nothing crazy. But according to a report from News Channel 9, SU’s first home game of the 2020 season will be the weekend of September 18 against the Colgate Raiders. In the piece, Syracuse Vice President and Chief Facilities Officer Pete Sala confirmed new aspects of what will specifically be under construction starting in March 2020 — as well as that first game vs. our long-time foes (and former rivals).
Syracuse already had two games scheduled for 2020: A September 12 road game at the Rutgers Scarlet Knights and a home date with the Liberty Flames on October 17. With Colgate added as an FCS team, the Orange would need one more FBS opponent (likely at home) to close out the schedule. That would mean starting the season on the road likely against an ACC opponent.
The all-time series between SU and Colgate is currently tied at 31-31-5, with the Orange winning 16 straight. These teams last met in 2016 — a 33-7 victory that marked Dino Babers’s first as Syracuse head coach. But have met just five times since the Carrier Dome first opened.
Back to the renovation stuff, though, apparently this is just phase one of the project (we sort of knew that). And phase two is set to be done by 2022. They mention air conditioning as a “consideration,” however, which seems like a different story than the initial one that seemed like it was a certainty.
So that’s just something to keep an eye on... In any case, Syracuse football is getting some scheduling done and that’s a good thing.
