Look Syracuse Orange fans. We know it’s only April and we’ve got a long off-season but we’re not going to sit back and avoid addressing slander when we see it. Today we potentially add Stewart Mandel from The Athletic to our list.
“What did Stewart do?” you ask. Are you sitting down for this? No I mean are you really sitting down for this?
In his latest mailbag, Stewart was asked to rank the schools with the best football and men’s basketball coaches. Here’s how he ranked them:
- Michigan State Spartans
- Texas A&M Aggies
- Michigan Wolverines
- Notre Dame Fighting Irish
- Oklahoma Sooners
- Duke Blue Devils
- TCU Horned Frogs
- Purdue Boilermakers
- Syracuse Orange
- Kentucky Wildcats
Look I know we’re not supposed to get offended by sleights (especially if unintentional) but come on here, people. How are you going to put Gary Patterson and Jamie Dixon at No. 7, Jeff Brohm and Matt Painter at 8 and then Dino Babers and Jim Boeheim? This is what The Athletic wants you to pay to read?
If you want to use a subjective ranking of coaches, that’s your prerogative. But tell me why you have two sets of coaches with zero rings ahead of the Syracuse duo. There’s nothing on the resumes of either group which would warrant them being in those positions. I’m not going to quibble with the top 5 that much right now because I think you can at least make an argument for them. But TCU and Purdue.... c’mon, Mandel.
Jim Boeheim has over 1,000 wins and a National title (plus five Final Fours). Give me something that either Jamie Dixon or Matt Painter have that compares even remotely to that. Neither of those guys has a Final Four appearance. So even if Dino Babers doesn’t have a long head coaching record, he’s accomplished as much as Jeff Brohm.
Maybe Mandel thinks Syracuse football was a flash in the pan last year and he needs more evidence to believe. Perhaps it’s his opinion that Boeheim has lost his magic. Either way, it still seems as though he’s underrated the Syracuse duo and we’re not going to let that slide.
On the other hand, at least Stewart didn’t come out with this take...
So Buzz Williams to Texas A&M is official. Half of SEC coaches have now either made a Final Four (Calipari, Pearl, Barnes, Frank Martin, Howland) or an Elite 8 (Buzz Williams, Mike White). At this point, there is no doubt: The best coaching in college hoops is in the SEC— Aaron Torres (@Aaron_Torres) April 3, 2019
That’s a spicy hot take right there.
What are your takes? Are there other combinations missing? Let us know in the comments.
