TNIAAM NCAA Tournament First Round Friday Open Thread

I guess there are still other games on...

NCAA Basketball: NCAA Tournament-Columbus Practice Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

Welp, the Syracuse Orange men’s basketball team is out of the NCAA Tournament after losing 78-69 to the Baylor Bears on Thursday night.

Surprisingly, however, there are still a lot of other games to be played in this thing, starting with those tipping off at 12:15 p.m. ET today.

Maybe you’ve sworn off the rest of March Madness, and if so, I don’t blame you. But for anyone else that wants to watch some basketball and their bracket, here’s your guide to what you’ll be watching on Friday, plus the when and where. We’ll add commentary where we feel it’s necessary.

(all time ET)

(7) Cincinnati Bearcats vs. (10) Iowa Hawkeyes, 12:15 p.m. (CBS)

Stingy defense (Cincinnati) vs. potent offense (Iowa) creates the sort of mismatch that will reward whichever team bends the other to their style of play first.

(8) Ole Miss Rebels vs. (9) Oklahoma Sooners, 12:40 p.m. (truTV)

Sure, watch this.

(3) Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. (14) Northern Kentucky Norse, 1:30 p.m. (TNT)

More clashing styles. Texas Tech is plodding while the Norse (not the best team name) try to speed things up a bit and move the ball. Northern Kentucky tested Kentucky a few years ago. Maybe this one lasts past halftime.

(4) Kansas State Wildcats vs. (13) UC Irvine Anteaters, 2 p.m. (TBS)

One of college basketball’s best mascots (an anteater) vs. one of the worst (a cat head on a person’s body). Both squads lack in the way of tempo, but UCI’s also a 30-win club and is a trendy upset pick.

(15) Colgate Raiders vs. (2) Tennessee Volunteers, 2:45 p.m. (CBS)

Even if you have the Vols going far in your bracket, it’s okay to root for ‘Gate a bit here, just for some CNY pride. Unless you’d rather not have to hear about the Raiders going further than Syracuse did in this year’s tournament, then don’t worry about it.

(1) Virginia Cavaliers vs. (16) Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs, 3:10 p.m. (truTV)

You’d very much like to see the Hoos lose to a 16-seed for the second straight year, and Gardner-Webb would as well. It probably doesn’t happen, but let’s hold out hope just for fun.

(6) Buffalo Bulls vs. (11) Arizona State Sun Devils, 4 p.m. (TNT)

If the streak of First Four teams getting to the second weekend lives on this year, it’ll probably be on the strength of ASU. Perhaps you don’t like UB, so you’re fine with that. But the Bulls are typically a fun watch and a potential agent of chaos in the other half of the West Region. So it’s not the worst thing to root for them.

(5) Wisconsin Badgers vs. (12) Oregon Ducks, 4:30 p.m. (TBS)

This game just says “Rose Bowl” to me.

(8) Utah State Aggies vs. (9) Washington Huskies, 6:50 p.m. (TNT)

The Aggies are a fun team that plays decent defense. Washington’s the exact sort of soul-sucking offensive basketball mixed in with great defense you’d expect from Jim Boeheim disciple Mike Hopkins. You’re rooting for UW.

(1) Duke Blue Devils vs. (16) North Dakota State Bison, 7:10 p.m. (CBS)

Duke probably wins going away. But if the Hoos don’t lose to a 16-seed, we’re fine with the Blue Devils instead.

(3) Houston Cougars vs. (14) Georgia State Panthers, 7:20 p.m. (TBS)

Do we believe in Houston? I’m honestly curious.

(5) Mississippi State Bulldogs vs. (12) Liberty Flames, 7:27 p.m. (truTV)

Shoot Liberty into the Sun.

(1) North Carolina Tar Heels vs. (16) Iona Gaels, 9:20 p.m. (TNT)

Okay, if you have to make this 1-seed lose, I guess that’s fine instead. As long as it’s one of them.

(8) VCU Rams vs. (9) UCF Knights, 9:40 p.m. (CBS)

Seems Marcus Evans is back, so this game suddenly gets more interesting again. Tacko Fall’s also fun. This should be the same sort of entertaining slugfest you usually get from an 8 vs. 9 game between two non-power teams.

(6) Iowa State Cyclones vs. (11) Ohio State Buckeyes, 9:50 p.m. (TBS)

Does anyone have expectations for either of these teams? Now that the season’s over, just glad I don’t have to root for the Buckeyes anymore.

(4) Virginia Tech Hokies vs. (13) Saint Louis Billikens, 9:57 p.m. (truTV)

I liked the old Saint Louis logo better. Also, Virginia Tech is probably going to look very good in a win that sees them display some real offensive prowess.
