National Signing Day 2019: RB Garrison Johnson signs with Syracuse

Syracuse continues their burgeoning Texas pipeline with the Manvel product.

NCAA Football: Syracuse at Pittsburgh Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Welcome to college football’s 2019 National Signing Day! After adding 17 players during the early signing period in December, the Syracuse Orange are hoping to finish the class strong today. As each player signs, we’ll be posting profiles here on TNIAAM. Next up? Garrison Johnson, from a familiar high school for Orange QB coach Kirk Martin:

Twitterfeed: @lilgarry_1

Hometown: Manvel, Tex.

Previous School: Manvel High School

Position: Running back

Stats: 5’11”, 230 pounds

Ratings: 3 stars from 247Sports and ESPN, 2 stars from Rivals (“Booooooo”)

Other offers: Indiana, Virginia, Nebraska, SMU, North Texas (once committed), UTSA, South Alabama

Dino’s projected nickname: “Captain Manvel,” nodding to the upcoming “Captain Marvel” film out in a month or so.

Player outlook: Johnson will be entering a crowded backfield, with Moe Neal, Abdul Adams, and Jarveon Howard slated to see the bulk of carries in 2019. Still, Johnson appears to have a bright future in Syracuse, with considerable size already as a high school senior. In his senior season, Johnson ran for an impressive 22 touchdowns. Johnson’s career may begin as a change-of-pace back, with the potential for a workhorse role down the line.
