Syracuse men’s basketball bracketology update: Orange trending up after beating Pitt

SU’s looking good in the latest projections after another road win.

NCAA Basketball: Syracuse at Pittsburgh Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

It’s February, and that means it’s the final full month of the regular season for college basketball. For the Syracuse Orange men’s team, that’s nine more games to put together a resume worthy of the NCAA Tournament. Luckily, they have numerous opportunities to make that happen.

We’ll be checking in on bracketology projections here pretty regularly from now through Selection Sunday (a pretty late March 17 this year). So if you don’t like what you see, check back after the next Orange win to see how things have improved. How’s Syracuse looking right now after beating the Pittsburgh Panthers on the road?

7-seed

SB Nation: Midwest Region, vs. St. John’s Red Storm

Stadium: West Region, vs. Indiana Hoosiers

Just two projections place Syracuse as high as a 7-seed right now, though plenty more will probably make that call if the Orange can beat Florida State tonight. A matchup with the Red Storm isn’t ideal, as St. John’s is a very talented team and will be extra motivated against SU (as they have been for the last couple matchups between the teams). Indiana, on the other hand, is fading and I’m fine with reliving the last time we beat the Hoosiers in the NCAAs (2013) on loop.

8-seed

CBS Sports: South Region, vs. St. John’s

ESPN: Midwest Region, vs. TCU Horned Frogs

FOX Sports: West Region, Texas Longhorns

TeamRankings.com: East Region, vs. Iowa Hawkeyes

USA Today: West Region, vs. Washington Huskies

*Bracket Matrix: East Region, vs. TCU (Bracket Matrix is an average of all bracket predictions)

Again, these could all very well jump up to a 7-seed with an upset win against FSU. You’ll find some familiar opponents here (St. John’s, TCU) and some familiar coaches too (TCU’s Jamie Dixon, Washington’s Mike Hopkins). Sign me up for Dixon again after last year’s postseason win over the Frogs. Don’t want anything to do with Hopkins, however.

Also, this Orange fan is selfishly rooting for the West region, so any potential Sweet 16/Elite 8 games are in nearby Anaheim.

9-seed

Bleacher Report: West Region, vs. Oklahoma Sooners

Sports Illustrated: West Region, vs. Auburn Tigers

Washington Post: West Region, vs. Oklahoma

Again, HI WEST REGION. Don’t love a matchup with Auburn, but OU’s fine. Ideally, Syracuse avoids any 8/9 game, since it sets up a matchup with a No. 1 seed in round two. In the case of the West Region, that’s probably Gonzaga right now.

NCAA.com: 7-seed vs. Texas Longhorns (East Region)

The Athletic: 10-seed vs. Auburn (South Region)

These sites haven’t yet updated their projections. SHUN THE NON-BELIEVERS at The Athletic for giving us our lowest seeding at 10, however.
