We are back with the statistic that even the most ardent anti-analytics Syracuse Orange basketball fans can enjoy. We spent the off-season sewing up the loose threads and we’ve got everything buttoned-up and ready for the big reveal. Welcome back to another season of The Official Jim Boeheim Jacket Toss Tracker™.
If you remember last year’s statistics we ended up with Syracuse having a 7-3 record in Jacket Toss games. All seven wins came when the discard occurred while the Orange enjoyed a lead and all but two tosses were in the Dome. Maybe it’s the way the heat gets turned up in the Syracuse winters that causes Jim to seek a bit of cooling relief.
This season begins with less of a toss and more of a fluff and fold from Jim but the committee ruled that any jacket removal during a game qualifies so we’ve got our first entry of the new season. After Jordan Burns of the Colgate Raiders hit a three-pointer to cut the Syracuse lead to 20 points, Boeheim calmly removed his coat and placed it down on the bench so it becomes the first entry of this season on the Tracker.

It’s interesting that last year in the game against Colgate, Boeheim tossed his coat when the Raiders reached 45 points. Maybe Jim had this planned going in and felt 45 was the magic number where he’d be set off but it became awkward when the game was well in hand.
The -4 isn’t a great start after last year’s plus/minus total finished at 49 but we’ve got a lot of basketball left to play and a colder start to winter means higher temperatures on Jim Boeheim Court. It’ll be another year before we have to worry about the impact of Dome upgrades on Boeheim’s desire to make himself more comfortable so be sure to tag us whenever you see the next sideline strip occur.
