Syracuse football just outside top 25 polls this week

We’re not ranked, but we’re much closer than we have been for most of the last 17 years...

No, the Syracuse Orange didn’t snap the program’s 17-year streak of being unranked. However, they came incredibly close after week four’s action in both the Coaches and AP polls that came out on Sunday.

Syracuse earned 83 votes in the Coaches Poll this week, and was just three spots outside of the top 25. Without digging around TOO far, it’s as close as the Orange have come to actually being included in the top 25 since at least 2003 (and probably the full run since the end-of-season poll in 2001).

SU was 11 spots outside of the top 25 in the AP Poll, though, with only 25 votes (compared to two last week). Brent Axe mentioned he didn’t vote for the Orange, but several other voters did, including:

  • Bob Asmussen, Champaign News-Gazette (21)
  • Ryan Aber, The Oklahoman (22)
  • Steve Layman, WTVF-TV (23)
  • Ferd Lewis, Honolulu Star-Advertiser (23)
  • Garry Smits, Florida Times-Union (23)
  • Keith Sargeant, NJ Advanced Media (24)
  • David Briggs, Toledo Blade (25)
  • Michael Lev, Arizona Daily Star (25)
  • Sam McKewon, Omaha World-Herald (25)
  • Jonny Miller, WBZ Radio (25)
  • Blake Toppmeyer, Knoxville News Sentinel (25)

Looking at the rest of both polls, there are still two future Syracuse opponents on there in Clemson (2 in Coaches/3 in AP) and Notre Dame (8/8). Boston College dropped out after losing to Purdue, and didn’t receive any votes in the AP poll (though eight in the Coaches Poll). NC state also received votes in both polls, sitting below SU in the Coaches Poll and above them in the AP.
