We still don’t know what this Syracuse Orange football season brings in the long-term. But in the short-term, it appears to bring some poll voters to our corner.
Sunday’s Coaches Poll included 11 votes for 3-0 Syracuse, while the AP Top 25 logged two for the Orange. SU last received votes before the Florida State game in 2017. This time around, winning 30-7 over the same Seminoles (even in a down year) was enough to get voters’ attention.
There are no actual rankings past 25, but if we’re counting, Syracuse received the 37th-most votes in the Coaches Poll, and tied for 41st (with Washington State) in the AP. Unsurprisingly, there are several Orange opponents in the polls right now: Clemson (3 in AP/2 in Coaches), Notre Dame (8/8) and new entrant Boston College (23/25).
So who voted for us this week? On the AP side, it was Ferd Lewis from the Honolulu Star-Advertiser — no surprise given that Hawaii’s Dino Babers’s alma mater and he always speaks fondly of the state. Brent Axe did not vote for Syracuse this week, which we can forgive him for (this time).

The coaches don’t make their ballots public until the final one, but there are at least a few guesses we can make as to who logged the 11 votes for Syracuse. Dino’s on this year’s poll, so he could potentially put the Orange in. ACC schools like Clemson (Dabo Swinney), Duke (David Cutcliffe), Pittsburgh (Pat Narduzzi) and Wake Forest (Dave Clawson) are also in there. With three of the four — Duke excluded — playing Syracuse, it would make sense to want to prop up a future opponent to help your own team’s perception. Other coaches that run similar offenses could also want to lend some support, to help their own cause.
Did you think Syracuse deserved votes this week? Admittedly, I felt it was still a little premature but wouldn’t blame anyone for including SU at or near the bottom. Feel free to yell about polling below. And if you’re so inclined, add your own top 25 ballot to our weekly rankings in the FanPost section.
