Syracuse basketball: Frank Howard suffers lower left leg injury

NCAA Basketball: NCAA Tournament-Second Round- Michigan State Spartans vs Syracuse Orange Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

Jim Boeheim announced through Syracuse Basketball’s Twitter account Friday afternoon that Frank Howard suffered a lower left leg injury.

Howard’s injury will sideline him momentarily, but Boeheim said that he’ll be back before the Orange’s opener on Nov. 6 against Eastern Washington. That is 53 days from now.

Last season, Howard started every game for Syracuse despite appearing to deal with a left hand issue through the February portion of the season, wearing a wrap on it. During his sophomore season, he tore four core muscles and played through it.

The availability of Jalen Carey lessens the urgency of a rapid recovery for Howard, compared to last season when he was the only option at point guard following Howard Washington’s season-ending ACL tear. Tyus Battle ultimately finished the Orange’s March Madness victory over Michigan State after Howard fouled out.

Washington is still recovering ahead of training camp, saying in June he expected to return to the court by September.

We’ll update this story as more details become available.
