Name: Caleb Okechukwu
Position: Defensive End
Hometown: Washington, D.C.
High School: St. John’s College
2017 stats: Okechukwu racked up 15 sacks, 38 tackles for loss, and 80 tackles overall as a strong-side defensive end. To the surprise of few, those numbers made him an Under Armour All-American.
2018 projections: Caleb likely has the talent to play right away if needed. However, in a year of massive turnover for the Syracuse Orange, defensive line is a spot where SU has plenty of depth. It’s definitely possible that Okechukwu redshirts, and we’ll see if he stays on the outside or adds significantly more weight to shift inside. Then again, if the injury bug strikes, anything could happen.
How’d he get here?: Okechukwu was a nice recruiting coup, as he picked the Orange over a number of top tier programs. A Texas offer may or may not have been on the table, but Okechukwu definitely spurned Arkansas, Arizona, and Tennessee.
What’d recruiting sites say?: Three stars all around.
Money quote: Caleb knew what was on the table in his recruitment, and this quote he gave to Stephen Bailey of syracuse.com says it all —
“I’m not going to lie, it was very, very hard picking Syracuse,” Okechukwu said, “but I had to follow my heart... I really just sat down with my family and they told me they were going to support me with whatever I do.”

Tweets of wonder: Solid choice of gif to celebrate adulthood:
What movie would Dino recommend for him?: Dino would pick “The Skulls”, released in Okechukwu’s birth year of 2000. Paul Walker plays Caleb Mandrake, a college freshman joining an elite society at school. Sort of fits with the real life Caleb here.
Interesting nugget o’interest: His high school head coach at St. John’s College, Joe Casemento, used to coach at Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse. Maybe Joe should be credited with the assist for Caleb’s signing with SU.
