Syracuse Orange preseason football camp officially started on Thursday, putting us staggeringly close to the opener against Western Michigan at the end of August.
On top of this intimidating boy band photo, and the startling fact that Rob Thomas and Carlos Santana’s “Smooth” was not played, yesterday’s press conference and today also included some interesting bits of information. Most notably, Tommy DeVito will be getting a chance to compete for the starting quarterback job with Eric Dungey (though I think that’s more to light a fire under Dungey than anything else).
As you expected, the wide receiver positions are all pretty open. Babers made a Allen Iverson “practice” reference, and there was discussion of football players walking onto the basketball team. Dungey’s been wake-surfing this summer, which probably concerns you, even if it’s fine.

“There’s a lot going into a wide receiver, you just can’t run routes,” Babers said. “You actually have to know what the coverage is after a step and a half to make sure you do the correct release, so you know whether it’s man zone, whether you’re going to be moving or whether you’re sitting down in an area.

“I think we finally have put together a period of time where our league has improved consistently in football. It’s not a flash-in-the-pan kind of situation, and there will be a year, I’m sure, where our champion or another team is not in the playoff. I mean, it’s already happened to some really good conferences. That’s part of the deal at this point in time.
