Get to Know Your Orange Man: #16, CB Carl Jones

The junior cornerback looks to see the field on defense a bit more this fall, hopefully.

NCAA Football: North Carolina State at Syracuse Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

Name: Carl Jones

Position: Corner back

Year: Junior

Height: 6’1”

Weight: 183

Hometown: Twinsburg, Ohio

High School: St. Edward

2017 stats: He was a reserve defensive back, playing mostly on special teams and recording a pair of tackles over the course of 12 games.

2018 projections: On the Syracuse Orange’s preseason depth chart, he’s listed as being in competition with freshman Trill Williams for a backup corner spot. He’ll be sure to see some of the field if he wins the battle, but will likely be the first one called in the event someone goes down if the spot goes to Williams.

How’d he get here?: A two-way player in high school, he got offered by two of the three service academies (Army and Air Force) before committing to Syracuse in December of his senior year.

What’d recruiting sites say?: 3-stars all around.

Money quote: Jones bestows an interesting title on DB coach Nick Monroe. From a syracuse.com article from when he committed in 2015:

Monroe, Jones’ future position coach, has been gifted the nickname “swag daddy.”

”He a very outgoing, fun guy,” Jones said, “but it looks like when it’s time to get to business he’s all about it. That’s one guy I liked a lot.”

Tweets of wonder: Oh his poor 0-16 soul...

What movie would Dino Babers recommend for him?: The Disney classic “Up” shows Carl Fredrickson will take an unanticipated journey after flying away. The fictional Carl ends up in paradise in the end, so hopefully the good fortunes come for the real -life Carl this football season.

Interesting nugget o’interest: He was actually high school teammates with former Syracuse sophomore linebacker Troy Henderson.
