Get to Know Your Orange Man: #17, WR Jamal Custis

Will a switch to the inside help the redshirt senior finally reach his potential?

NCAA Football: Central Connecticut State at Syracuse Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

Name: Jamal Custis

Position: Wide receiver

Year: (Redshirt) Senior

Height: 6’5”

Weight: 213

Hometown: Philadelphia, Pa.

High School: Neumann-Goretti

2017 Stats: Wound up with eight catches for 120 yards and a touchdown while battling through injuries and playing in eight games.

2018 Projections: Now that he appears to be one of the Syracuse Orange’s starting inside receivers, he could end up creating a lot of mismatches there with his size advantage, much like a tight end would. If he can stay healthy, Custis could end up in the 30-40 catch range and realize his potential as a red zone threat.

How Did He Get Here?: UConn, Pitt and Rutgers all offered. But he did what most sensible people would do in that predicament, and went with Syracuse instead.

What Did Recruiting Sites Say?: Three stars across the board.

Money Quote: It was a mixed bag on this mission last year. Let’s see what happens now that Ishmael isn’t there anymore.

“... Of course, both of us want to be the starter on the opposite side of Steve (Ishmael), but we all have to be good, regardless.”

Tweets of Wonder: After providing a highlight versus Florida State last year, Custis provided some thoughts on Wake. My thoughts, after the game? Never again, Wake. Never again.

What Movie Would Dino Recommend for Him?: Jamal Woolard starred in the titular role in “Notorious,” the Notorious B.I.G. biopic. He also appeared in the 2Pac film “All Eyez On Me” as Biggie as well, creating some sort of 1990s hip hop cinematic universe. I’m sure Tony Stark makes a cameo in both too.

Interesting Nugget O’Interest: Custis played high school hoops, and there was talk when he arrived about moonlighting for the basketball team. Given his injury troubles on the football field, though, that just never came to pass.

Let’s Get a Good Look Atcha: Julian Whigham talks Tommy DeVito, and Custis from spring ball this year.
