Name: Ryan Guthrie
Hometown: Cumming, Ga.
High School: West Forsyth
2017 Stats: Played linebacker, defensive end and special teams, with 11 tackles, 1.5 sacks and a fumble recovery over the course of 12 games.
2018 Projections: Well, they should be significantly better since he’s now the Syracuse Orange’s starting middle linebacker. At Ellsworth Community College, he was an expert at getting behind the line of scrimmage (25.5 tackles for loss in 2016), and that skill will probably be used a bit differently with SU. Expect him to be utilized in coverage given the traditional role of MLBs in the Tampa-2, but Guthrie will be applying pressure just the same. Expect big tackle numbers (at least 80), and enough TFLs and sacks to disrupt opposing passing games a bit.
How’d He Get Here: His impressive run at Elsworth CC earned him a ton of top-level MAC offers and others, as he eventually ended up committing to Tulane. However, he bid the Green Wave adieu once the Orange came calling.
What’d Recruiting Sites Say: Three stars from everyone, save the now-defunct (folded into 247Sports) Scout, which said two.
Guthrie’s anxious to prove himself at the top of the depth chart, and the Orange linebackers are all willing to fight it out for playing time, according to a spring conversation with Syracuse.com.
“It’s a hungry room right now. I know if I don’t do what I’ve got to do, I won’t stay at No. 1. And we need all the linebackers. We need everyone to be successful.”
Twitter feed: No Twitter for him anymore.
Tweets of Wonder: Y’know what, Hoya Suxa? I’d believe this.
PROBABLY UNTRUTHFUL FACT ABOUT A RANDOM SYRACUSE FOOTBALL PLAYER:— Hoya Suxa (@HoyaSuxa) August 8, 2017
Ryan Guthrie: Real name - Virgil Steambroth. Tried to water ski a bidet.
What movie would Dino recommend for him?: Kevin Guthrie (no relation) appeared in 2017’s “Dunkirk,” which seems like exactly the sort of war drama Dino would enjoy. He’d recommend it to Ryan not just for the last name similarity, but also just the fact that it was a quality film.
Interesting Nugget O’Interest: Elsworth CC has produced some notable football names over the years, including 1992 NFL rookie of the year Dale Carter and hall of famer Andre Tippett. Hopefully the same can be said for Guthrie at some point.
Let’s Get a Good Look Atcha: Signing Day highlights are always helpful.
