Get to Know Your Orange Man: #22, RB Markenzy Pierre

Might we see a little bit more of the Florida runner?

Name: Markenzy Pierre

Position: Running back

Year: Sophomore

Height: 5’11”

Weight: 217

Hometown: Orlando, Fla.

High School: Liberty

2017 Stats: Pierre started off his freshman season well enough, with nine carries for 46 yards in garbage time versus CCSU in the opener. But from there, it was mostly special teams for him. He had six carries for 17 yards against CMU and 10 for 26 against Louisville. Pierre also tallied a six-yard reception.

2018 Projections: With luck, he’s a bit more consistent and can become a short yardage option for the Syracuse Orange. Moe Neal and Dontae Strickland will still be getting the lion’s share of carries for SU, unless Pierre has progressed significantly as a blocker.

How’d He Get Here?: He was an October flip from Western Kentcuky. Pierre also had offers from schools like Memphis, MTSU, Utah State, Appalachian State and Georgia State.

What’d Recruiting Sites Say?: Both 247Sports and ESPN said he was a three-star running back and top 50 or so in the country. Not bad at all.

Money Quote: Markezny’s high school coach had plenty to say about his abilities toward the end of his time at Liberty. With luck, Pierre can turn into that power back he describes.

“Markenzy is a true running back. He understands the blocking scheme, what we’re trying to get done… he knows when to hug the double-team tight, when to bounce it. He knows when it’s time to make something happen or when it’s time to put his head down and get three or four yards and be happy with that. He’s just a really good power back.”

What movie would Dino Babers recommend for him?: Pierre Niney appeared in 2014’s “Yves Saint Laurent” biopic. I don’t think Dino is much of an admirer of French designers, but perhaps I’m completely wrong there.

Interesting Nugget O’Interest: Markenzy was a four-sport athlete in high school. Along with football, he also ran track, wrestled and played basketball. We’re glad he picked football.
