Get to Know Your Orange Man: #24, LB Shyheim Cullen

The redshirt junior looks to finally get his chance at significant playing time on the field this fall.

NCAA Football: North Carolina State at Syracuse Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

Name: Shyheim Cullen

Position: Linebacker

Year: (Redshirt) Junior

Height: 6’0”

Weight: 224

Hometown: Lowell, Mass.

High School: Lowell High School

2017 Stats: Shy played a big role on special teams this year, playing in 11 games and collecting four tackles. He also recovered a muffed punt at FSU. The only difference between this season and last season is one game and four fewer tackles (he recovered a muffed punt against FSU the year before as well).

2018 Projections: Things are looking up for Cullen in 2018, as he’s finally listed on the two-deep as the second-string weakside linebacker. He was originally a strongside linebacker, but seems to be making strides with the slight position change. Expect some more special teams contributions from Cullen as well.

How’d He Get Here?: He picked the Syracuse Orange out of high school. Being from Massachusetts, he got a lot of receive interest from other schools in the Northeast (UConn, Boston College, Rutgers) as well.

What’d Recruiting Sites Say?: Mostly three stars, with a bearish two stars from Rivals.

Twitterfeed: @shycullen24

Tweets of Wonder: That’s called a game face

What movie would Dino Babers recommend for him?: Let’s give him the entire Transformers series, where Optimus Prime is voiced by Canadian actor Peter Cullen.

Interesting Nugget O’Interest: Shy’s road to the SU was certainly a unique one, including severe health issues and eight different foster homes. Syracuse.com’s Stephen Bailey wrote a great piece about that journey.

Let’s Get a Good Look Atcha: Solid tackle from Shy here. Video taken from last year’s fall preseason.
