Get to Know Your Orange Man: #90, K Cory Smigel

Another kicker for you to get acquainted with.

NCAA Football: Wake Forest at Syracuse Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports

Name: Cory Smigel

Position: Kicker

Year: Freshman

Height: 5’8”

Weight: 144

Hometown: North Royalton, Ohio

High School: North Royalton

2017 Stats: None last year as he took community college courses. But as a high school senior (in 2016), Smigel hit 5-of-7 field goals and 17-of-18 extra points, while also punting (averaged 37.1 yards).

2018 projections: Is in the mix with others to be the Syracuse Orange’s kicker or kickoff specialist if starters happen to go down.

How’d he get here? Smigel was an early commit last summer as a preferred walk-on and never really entertained other options.

What’d recruiting sites say?: Nada. Their loss, I suppose.

Money quote: This is more about the player Cory could one day replace, Cole Murphy:

Syracuse’s biggest loss on special teams is four-year starting kicker Cole Murphy. He connected on 71 percent of field goals over his career, including 13-for-16 last season. He made all four field goals in sloppy conditions to keep the Orange within earshot of nationally ranked Miami (Fla.).

Tweets of wonder: Cory plays HQ Trivia, apparently.

What movie would Dino Babers recommend for him? Any of the “Lord of the Rings” films given Cory’s last name matches that of Gollum (aka Sméagol). Y’know, the one that says “precious” a lot.

Interesting Nugget O’Interest: Scored 21 goals for his high school soccer team when he was a sophomore.
