Get to Know Your Orange Man: #91, K Andre Szmyt

There are quite a few walk-on kickers at SU right now, if you were unaware...

NCAA Football: North Carolina State at Syracuse Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

Name: Andre Szmyt

Position: Kicker

Year: (Redshirt) Freshman

Height: 6’1”

Weight: 196

Hometown: Vernon Hills, Ill.

High School: Vernon Hills

2017 Stats: N/A, since he redshirted.

2018 projections: Could see the field this year as a back-up kicker. The Syracuse Orange have starters there in Sterling Hofrichter (placekicker) and Nolan Cooney (kickoffs). But if there are any issues with either, Szmyt is one of a couple options that could jump in.

How’d he get here? Though he didn’t have any scholarship offers, he did get some preferred walk-on looks, even committing to Louisville in that fashion before following SU director of player personnel Dave Boller over from the Cards.

What’d recruiting sites say?: Khol’s Kicking camp gave him four stars, but no one else talked about him.

Money quote: #SHUNTHENONBELIEVERS

“I would tell (Coach Bill Bellecomo), ‘Yeah, I’m going to come out for the football team. He’d always be in doubt. He’d said, ‘No, you’re a soccer guy. You’re going to be playing soccer.’“

Twitterfeed: @AndreSzmyt

Tweets of wonder: Szmyt nailed a 35-yard field goal in the spring game this year.

What movie would Dino Babers recommend for him? You may recall the 1994 kids film “Andre,” telling the true story of a seal who befriended a little girl and her family. That’s not this Andre, but still appropriate here.

Interesting Nugget O’Interest: Szmyt only started playing football in fall of 2016 (and was pretty good right off the bat, hitting a 47-yard field goal).

Let’s get a good look at ya: Here’s Andre letting it rip.
