Southerland had a solid four-year career in Orange, averaging 13.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game in his senior season while helping Syracuse to the 2013 Final Four. Since then Southerland has mostly played mostly in the NBA G-League, but has also held brief stints in both France and Italy.
In last summer’s TBT, James led the charge as Boeheim’s Army came back from a 25-point deficit to secure a win against Team FOE and it’s one of the reasons Belbey wanted him back this year. “Very few guys can match the energy that James brings to the court. His optimism in infectious, and it was probably the main reason why our team did not give up last year when we trailed FOE by 25 points. That and the fact that he has the skill to score 23 points in 23 minutes like he did that game make him a special player & person.”
The Boeheim’s Army roster now has two forwards and two guards and will still need at least three more players by June 1 to be eligible.
