The Syracuse Orange have been very busy on the scheduling front in the last 6-9 months. And the latest move is yet another one to continue filling in SU’s future non-conference schedule.
According to a report from FBSchedules, Syracuse will host the Ohio Bobcats on September 10, 2022. SU will pay $850,000 for the one-off date which... is pretty steep, I’d say.
Ohio has been over-shadowed by some of the MAC’s recent powers (Toledo, Bowling Green, Northern Illinois), but Frank Solich’s club has been among the conference’s most consistent for over a decade now. Since he took over in 2005, the Bobcats have won six games or more all but twice.
All-time, this teams have actually met just twice, which is odd given the teams’ proximity. They last met in 1921, a 38-0 win for SU. Syracuse also beat the Bobcats 73-0 in 1916.
The move makes sense for the Orange given Dino Babers’s using Ohio as one of numerous recruiting focus areas in recent years. There are currently three players from Ohio on the 2018 roster — which is among the top 10 states represented right now.
As far as future schedules go, this is just the second confirmed game for Syracuse’s 2022 non-conference slate. The Orange will also host Notre Dame on a date TBD.
Looking big-picture, the lone schedule locked up for future seasons is 2019. SU recently added games for 2020 and 2021 vs. Rutgers. However, there are still five openings left between 2020 and 2022 alone.
