With all of the football news going on today, you’d be forgiven for not realizing there was some futbol news to report as well.
The Syracuse Orange men’s soccer team (7-6-4) scored a 16-seed in the NCAA Tournament. After missing the postseason last year, it’s great to see SU bounce back in a big way this season. It’s been a season of quality results and close losses to good teams (as is always the case in ACC play), highlighted by a win over then-No. 1 Wake Forest and a draw against No. 11 Louisville.
For those that aren’t sure of how the NCAA Tournament works for soccer, there are 16 numbered seeds who get byes, and 32 that do not. Syracuse’s first game would be on November 17 against the winner of the Rider/Akron game. The Orange beat the Zips back on October 1 in Akron, 3-1.
Should SU win that game, they’d have to face the winner of Wake Forest vs. the winner of New Hampshire/Colgate. The Orange had a draw against Colgate — and as mentioned, they already beat the Deacs.
Nine ACC teams made the field this year: No. 1 Wake Forest, No. 4 Louisville, No. 5 North Carolina, No. 6 Duke, No. 7 Notre Dame, No. 9 Virginia, No. 12 Virginia Tech, No. 16 Syracuse and unranked NC State.
