The Syracuse Orange kept fans on the edge of their seats with a dramatic double overtime win over North Carolina on Saturday. And as you can imagine, SU’s performance of did not go unnoticed down in Tobacco Road.
Two Orange players were honored as part of the ACC’s player of the week rundown — something that’s become a bit of a staple this year.
Jamal Custis, who was named the receiver of the week, averaged over 23 yards per catch on Saturday, for his second game with over 100 yards this season. The senior also added a touchdown in the first overtime, his fourth of the season. He set a new high for catches in a game, with seven, while just missing his career high in single-game yards (had 162, versus his high of 168).
The ACC linebacker of the week, Ryan Guthrie, racked up an impressive 12 tackles, leading the Orange. Nine of those stops were solo tackles, with 1.5 for a loss, plus a fumble recovery. This is the first time Guthrie earned a weekly ACC honor in 2018, and he’s the fourth ‘Cuse defender to be recognized this year.
For those wondering if they’d see Tommy DeVito’s name here for his three-touchdown performance, Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence topped 300 yards against NC State and took home the honors for top “rookie.”
Congratulations to Custis and Guthrie for a great week and Orange victory!
