Note: Sorry folks. Jumped the gun on this thread earlier, so here’s an update with Julian’s thoughts.
Halftime Thread
At the half Syracuse trails LSU 14-3 after a pick-six early in the first quarter and late 43-yard touchdown at the end of the half. What’s going well and what adjustments do the Orange need to make to give themselves a chance in the second half?
Defense
Syracuse’s defense has played well up to this point allowing just 7 points to this LSU offense. The biggest key? Pressure. The Orange have moved LSU quarterback Danny Etling all over the field and forced him into several bad throws. Before the 43-yard touchdown pass, Syracuse held Etling to just 52 yards passing on 14 attempts.
A superior push and dominant defensive line play have allowed Syracuse’s defense to contain Derrius Guise and LSU’s stable of running backs allowing just 46 yards in two quarters.
If Syracuse’s defense can stick to its pressure defense gameplan and minimize LSU’s opportunities at explosive plays, they’ll certainly give themselves a chance to win.
Offense
Eric Dungey and the offense need to pick it up. The Sean Riley touchdown drop was huge and Syracuse would be in a much better predicament coming out of the half. The biggest adjustment Syracuse needs to make at the half? Winning their one on one matchups on the outside. LSU has played man coverage all game long. If Steve Ishamel and co can find a way to get off of their man, especially deep down field Syracuse may find a way to come out of Death Valley with the win.
What are you seeing from the Orange so far?
