Syracuse Orange basketball fans are used to sweating out opening round tournament games against lesser-known opponents. Last night Boeheim’s Army eased those nerves by jumping out to a 20-2 lead on the Dubois Dream. Most of the damage in that early run came from behind the 3-point line as Boeheim’s Army hit 6 3-pointers to remove any doubt in this contest.
Late addition John Gillon led the Army with a team-high 26 points while Brandon Triche recorded a triple-double with 11 points, 11 rebounds, and 12 assists, a few of which were of the highlight-variety.
It was a balanced offensive effort for The Army as six of the seven players reached double figures. CJ Fair had 16 points, Eric Devendorf and Trevor Cooney had 15 each, and Rick Jackson chipped in with 12 points. Cooney even showed that he can get up and throw it down on this play.
With the win, Boeheim’s Army advances to today’s second round to face Gael Nation, who knocked off City of Gods and former Georgetown Hoya Mike Sweetney 88-86 yesterday. The Gaels are a collection of former Iona players joined by former St. John’s star D’Angelo Harrison. They knocked down 13 of 28 shots from 3 yesterday and will test the man-to-man defense of Boeheim’s Army.
Let’s hope the addition of Donte Greene to the Boeheim’s Army line-up will help them advance to next weekend’s Regional Finals in Brooklyn. Today’s game will tip at 2:45 and is available on ESPN3.
