Get to know your Orange Man: #16, QB Zack Mahoney

The senior quarterback will be Eric Dungey’s back up

NCAA Football: Syracuse at Pittsburgh Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Name: Zack Mahoney

Position: Quarterback

Year: Senior

Height: 6’2"

Weight: 192 lbs.

Hometown: La Grange Park, Ill.

High School: Lyons Township

2016 stats: He served as Syracuse’s backup quarterback, but he still appeared in 10 games. He started the last three games after an injury to starting quarterback Eric Dungey . He completed 82-of-135 passes for 943 yards with eight touchdowns and four interceptions. He rushed 44 times for 47 yards (1.1 avg.) and two touchdowns. In the last game of the season against Pittsburgh, he accumulated over 400 passing yards in a losing effort.

2017 projections: He will be the backup to Dungey to begin the year. Although, if the junior struggles or (everyone please knock on wood) he suffers another injury, then Mahoney will get reps at quarterback.

How’d he get here?: He started off at College at DuPage before transferring to Syracuse. He was not recruited out of high school, so he needed a year at the junior college level.

What’d recruiting sites say?: Nothing

Tweets of wonder: Fairly impressive to be an ACC quarterback while also receiving a masters from the best communications school in the country.

What movie would Dino recommend for him?: He should like the 2004 comedy, Garden State, starring Zack Braff. It’s alright. I mainly watched it because I liked Braff in Scrubs but it’s a good movie for a slow night.

Interesting nugget o’interest: His brother Spencer is in the New York Yankees farm system.

Let’s get a good look at ya: Mahoney produced one of the more exciting plays last season, throwing a hail Mary to Amba Etta-Tawo at the end of the first half against Florida State.
