Name: Shyheim Cullen
Year: (Redshirt) Sophomore
Weight: 209 lbs.
Hometown: Lowell, Mass.
High School: Lowell High School
2016 Stats: Shy was a big factor on special teams, playing in all 12 games and collecting eight tackles there (and also recovering a muffed punt vs. FSU). Outside of Brisly Estime and Sterling Hofrichter, you could argue Cullen was our best special teamer last season.
2017 Projections: Cullen’s not on the current two-deep, but he’ll still challenge for playing time just the same. Back in spring, he was listed as the second strongside linebacker, but position changes and new arrivals altered that a bit in the recent release. Still, he’ll likely get some burn at the SAM spot, and also lead the special teams unit once again.
How'd He Get Here?: He picked the Syracuse Orange out of high school, though did receive interest from some of the other schools in the region (UConn, Boston College, Rutgers) as well.
What'd Recruiting Sites Say?: Three stars from most, and two stars from Rivals.
Tweets of Wonder: Cullen’s been putting in work toward playing time, even making some noise at the spring game this year.
Shyheim Cullen credited with a sack of Eric Dungey, which meant touching him on the shoulder pad— Tomer Langer (@tomer_langer) April 22, 2017
What movie would Dino Babers recommend for him?: Doubt Dino’s a fan of them, but the (awful) Twilight movies feature a character named Edward Cullen. He’s a vampire. Cool?
Interesting Nugget O'Interest: Syracuse.com’s Stephen Bailey wrote a great piece about Shy’s road to the Orange, including his stops at eight different foster homes. Well worth a read.
Let’s Get a Good Look Atcha: Dude knows his way around the weight room. This was from a few years ago, and he’s only gotten bigger since.
