Name: Kielan Whitner
Weight: 202 lbs.
Hometown: Lawrenceville, Ga.
High School: Mountain View High School
2016 stats: Logged three starts at safety last year, recording 35 tackles with a pick and a fumble recovery. He played in 10 games, though production ramped up as the season wore on (and injuries continued to plague the secondary).
2017 projections: The preseason depth chart has switched him over the strongside linebacker after two years playing safety. He won’t start (at least not right away), but he could push Jonathan Thomas, who currently inhabits the position.
How did he get here?: Appalachian State was pursuing pretty hard, but he ended up going with the Syracuse Orange over offers from App State, Georgia State, Army, Air Force, Troy and more.
What’d recruiting sites say?: Rivals and 247Sports said two stars, which is fine, I suppose.
Twitter feed: @twitty_whitty25
Tweets of wonder: He was a Scholar Athlete of the Week last year.
What movie would Dino Babers recommend for him?: Dino’s pick is 1992’s The Bodyguard, starring Whitney Houston. Since the film was before Kielan’s time, perhaps he’s never seen it.
Interesting nugget o’interest: He was born in Los Angeles (I approve!). Kielan’s dad Keith also played professional baseball in the Detroit Tigers’ system. In two seasons at the Rookie League and Single-A levels, he hit .221 with 20 RBIs, one home run and a .579 OPS.
Let’s get a good look atcha: He chats with Zaire Franklin for a bit.
