As the accolades come pouring in for Syracuse Orange football players this offseason, who would’ve guessed that QB Zack Mahoney would be among the top honorees? The senior former walk-on found himself on another watch list on Tuesday.
The Wuerffel Trophy, which bills itself as “College Football’s Premier Award for Community Service,” honors the player that best displays commitment to community service, athletics and academics.
Mahoney is the latest in a line of Syracuse players to end up on the notable watch list. Some of the most recent names on the list have included Jason Emerich (2016), Riley Dixon (2015) and Sam Rodgers (2014), among others. Any time you can share some space with Dixon, it’s quite an achievement.
As you likely know already, Mahoney is the president of the Syracuse University chapter of Uplifting Athletes. He’s organized this year’s “Life for Life” event (happening tomorrow!). Mahoney is also a member of the Syracuse Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), and received the 2016 ACC Top Six for Service Award for his dedication to serving others and commitment to community outreach programs.
His community service has also been recognized this offseason with a nomination for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.
Congrats, Zack! And here’s him previewing Lift for Life tomorrow. Support Zack and the rest of SU’s athletes in the endeavor if you can.
