The Biletnikoff Award announced its 2017 watch list on Tuesday, and that collection of names includes Syracuse Orange wide receiver Ervin Philips this year.
Philips is one of six ACC players to make the preseason watch list, along with Deon Cain (Clemson), Cam Phillips (Virginia Tech), T.J. Rahming (Duke), Ahmmon Richards (Miami) and Jester Weah (Pittsburgh).
Though Erv did not make the All-ACC team last year (major snub, in Orange fans’ opinions), he was fourth in the conference in receptions with 90, to pair with 822 yards and six scores. This season, he’s the conference’s leading returning receiver, and stands a good chance to make the preseason All-ACC squad as one of the league’s top five or so wideouts.
Last year, fellow Syracuse pass-catcher Amba Etta-Tawo ended up making the cut as a semifinalist for the award after not even being included on the initial watch list (he was added during the season).
The Biletnikoff Award is handed out by the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation Inc. to annually recognize the most outstanding receiver in college football. That doesn’t limit the pool to just wide receivers, either, as tight ends, slot backs and running backs are also eligible.
Congrats to Erv, and best of luck in your attempt to take this award home this year.
