Syracuse Orange senior quarterback and former walk-on Zack Mahoney is a nominee for the 2017 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. He was one of 146 nominees released by the American Football Coaches Association on Monday.
The Good Works Team has been around since 1992 to recognize “...student-athletes nominated have made significant contributions to the greater good of society, inspiring future generations of young athletes and the larger college football community.“
The final roster of 22 players (11 from D1, another 11 from D2) will be unveiled in September from this 146-player pool. The voting panel consists of coaches, media and Tim Tebow (because of course). Fans will then have the opportunity to vote for the Captain of the 22 player squad on ESPN.com.
Mahoney is president of the Syracuse University chapter of Uplifting Athletes. In his role as president, Mahoney is organizing the 2017 "Lift for Life." In addition to his work with Uplifting Athletes, Mahoney is a member of the Syracuse Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and received the 2016 ACC Top Six for Service Award for his dedication to serving others and commitment to community outreach programs.
Since the award’s creation, four Orange football student-athletes have been selected for the team, with Sam Rodgers (2014) being the most recent. Congratulations to Zack and the rest of the student athletes recognized!
