Former Syracuse QB Ryan Nassib ‘likely’ to sign with New Orleans Saints

The one-time heir to Eli Manning is about to find a new home.

It appears that former Syracuse Orange quarterback Ryan Nassib could be signing with the New Orleans Saints soon, according to NFL Network insider Ian Rappaport.

Nassib, who’s spent the last four seasons on the New York Giants, became a free agent at the end of the year, when Big Blue didn’t choose to resign him. The former Orange star was once thought of as the heir to Eli Manning at QB. However, with Manning being pretty durable and the Giants drafting Cal’s Davis Webb this offseason, Nassib’s time in New York ran out.

He saw snaps in just two seasons with the Giants - 2014 and 2015. In total, he was 9-for-10, for 128 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Assuming he signs with the Saints now, Nassib will get a chance to solidify himself as the No. 2 QB on the depth chart. Right now, Drew Bress is the starter, with Chase Daniel and Garrett Grayson listed as his primary backups. However, Brees has an out clause after the 2017 season, and the other two are far from assured of anything.

So ideally, Nassib could be the Saints’ starter as soon as 2018. Five years is not an ideal timeline for him to wait for a real shot in the NFL. But if he winds up under center next year, that’s really all that matters.

Hopefully the deal with the Saints is solidified soon, and Nassib can get to work in camp.
