With only four more ACC games remaining, the options for the ACC Tournament seeding are narrowing. Why don’t we go down the rabbit hole a little bit.
Tonight UNC and UVA faceoff for a night game.
Scenario 1: UNC beats UVA
SU 3-0
Duke 2-1
UNC 1-1
Notre Dame 1-2
UVA 0-3
What is set in stone: UVA is #5 Seed
Scenario 2: UVA beats UNC
SU 3-0
Duke 2-1
UVA 1-2
Notre Dame 1-2
UNC 0-2
What is set in stone: SU is #1 seed
So as you can see, in tonight’s UVA-UNC game the Cavaliers will be playing for a chance to potentially stay out of the basement.
Let’s keep going. Based off the previous two scenarios we would move into next week with Syracuse playing UNC and Duke playing UVA. The final ACC regular season conference game will be played in two weeks when Notre Dame and UNC faceoff.
Scenario 1A: SU beats UNC, Duke beats UVA
1 Seed:SU
2 Seed:Duke
3 Seed:UNC/UND
4 Seed:UNC/UND
5 Seed:UVA
The three and four seeds would be determined by the head to head matchup of UNC/UND.
Scenario 1B: SU beats UNC, UVA beats Duke
1 Seed:SU
2 Seed:Duke
3 Seed:UNC/UND
4 Seed:UNC/UND
5 Seed:UVA
Again, the third and fourth seeds would be determined by the head to head matchup of UNC/UND.
Scenario 1C: UNC beats Syracuse, Duke beats UVA
1 Seed:
2 Seed:
3 Seed:
4 Seed:
5 Seed:UVA
It would all be determined by the UNC/UND game. If UNC beats Notre Dame then SU, Duke and UNC would be tied for first and determined by fewest conference goals allowed between the tied teams while UND would be fourth. If Notre Dame beats UNC then it would look like this: 1. SU 2. Duke 3. UND 4. UNC 5. UVA.
Scenario 1D: UNC beats Syracuse, UVA beats Duke
1 Seed:
2 Seed:
3 Seed:
4 Seed:
5 Seed:UVA
Again, we would have the same issue and would have to go further to the UNC/UND game. If UND beats UNC in two weeks then it would look like this: 1. SU 2. Duke 3. UND 4. UNC 5. UVA. If UNC beats UND 1. UNC 2. SU 3. Duke 4. UND 5. UVA.
Moving on… Now let’s look at the expanded scenarios if UVA beats UNC tonight.
Scenario 2A: Syracuse beats UNC, Duke beats UVA
1 Seed:SU
2 Seed:Duke
3 Seed:
4 Seed:
5 Seed:
Only the top two seeds would be set. If UNC then beat UND there would be a three way tie for third place with the tie breaker being decided by fewest conference goals allowed amongst the tied teams. If UND beat UNC then the seeding would look as follows: 1. SU 2. Duke 3. UND 4. UVA 5. UNC.
Scenario 2B: Syracuse beats UNC, UVA beats Duke
1 Seed:SU
2 Seed:
3 Seed:
4 Seed:
5 Seed:
If UNC beat UND: 1. SU 2. UVA 3. Duke 4. UNC 5. Notre Dame. If UND beats UNC then SU would be the first seed, UNC would be the fifth seed and there would be a three way tie for second which would be broked by fewest conference goals allowed amongst the tied teams.
Scenario 2C: UNC beats Syracuse, Duke beats UVA
1 Seed:SU
2 Seed:Duke
3 Seed: UNC/UND
4 Seed: UVA/UND
5 Seed:UNC/UVA
If UNC were to beat UND then the Heels would be third followed by Notre Dame and then Virginia. If UND were to beat UNC then Notre Dame would be the third seed while UVA would be fourth and UNC would be fifth.
Scenario 2D: UNC beats Syracuse, UVA beats Duke
1 Seed:SU
2 Seed:
3 Seed:
4 Seed:
5 Seed:
If UNC beats UND: 1. SU 2. UVA 3. Duke 4. UNC 5.UND. If UND beats UNC then SU would be first and UNC would be fifth and there would be a three way tie for second that would be decided by fewest conference goals allowed against the tied teams.
