Syracuse softball swept by Florida State over the weekend

The home sweep won’t do SU any favors in the standings.

The Syracuse Orange softball team took on arguably the best team in the nation this past weekend in the Florida State Seminoles. Unfortunately, the results showed just how deep the gulf is between the two programs. The ‘Noles swept the Orange over the course of three games -- an 18-9 victory on Saturday, then 13-4 and 6-5 wins, respectively, on Sunday.

The three straight losses drop Syracuse to 19-15 on the year, but far more concerning is their 3-9 record in ACC play. SU’s now lost six straight ACC games since they took the final two games of a series vs. Georgia Tech.

Florida State, on the other hand, is an incredible 38-1-1 overall and 18-0 in the ACC.

While Syracuse got lit up from a pitching standpoint vs. the ‘Noles, their bats were alive in spurts. The nine runs scored in game one was tied for second-most all season.

In the first game, Sydney O’Hara was 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Alicia Hansen had three RBIs in that contest (including a home run), while Hannah Dossett added two of her own.

The Sunday doubleheader saw the same contributors (and others) stepping up. O’Hara contributed an RBI in each game. Bryce Holmgren was the star of the third game, however, going three-for-three with three RBIs -- including a home run.

Syracuse actually led the third game for a good portion. After scoring five runs in the third inning, they were up 5-4. It wasn’t until a two-run sixth inning from the Seminoles that the Orange gave up the lead (unfortunately for good).

The Orange get a one-game respite from ACC play this Wednesday, when the play at Canisius. Then SU’s at Pittsburgh for a three-game series this weekend.
