Freshman Tyus Battle will return to Syracuse for his sophomore season, according to Mike McAllister of Scout.com. The news was confirmed by Mike Waters of Syracuse.com on Monday morning.
“Tyus is excited about returning,” Gary Battle, Tyus’ father, told Syracuse.com.
Battle isn’t projected to be selected in the 2017 NBA draft, but is already a second-round projection in next year’s draft, according to DraftExpress.
Battle averaged 11.3 points per game for the Orange this year. SU’s season ended in the second round of the NIT to Ole Miss at the Carrier Dome last Saturday.
The 6-foot-6 freshman shot 79 percent from the charity stripe, 36 percent from 3-point range and over 43 percent from the floor overall.
He scored a career-high 23 points against No. 9 Virginia on February 4 at the Carrier Dome. The Orange won the game, 66-62.
“I’ll be back,” Battle told McAllister after SU’s win over UNC-Greensboro. “I’m pretty sure I’ll be back.”
Syracuse will return all three freshman from this year’s team — Battle, Taurean Thompson and Matt Moyer, who took a redshirted.
