After the utter rejection of Selection Sunday, maybe you’re not ready to watch yet another selection show. But the excellent Syracuse Orange women’s team will discover their own path to return to the Final Four on Monday night.
The Orange women’s basketball team went 21-10 this season, and 11-5 in the ACC. They’ve collected three high-quality wins -- NC State, Miami, Virginia Tech — though just one of those (Tech) was on the road. Syracuse went 5-5 on the road and 3-4 on neutral courts. SU is also ranked 31st in RPI, and have a slew of quality losses (which will certainly help with strength of schedule metrics).
With most of the top seeds holding pretty steady across the sport, there hasn’t been much bracketology movement leading up to the selection show. Syracuse has long been slotted in as a six-seed in the Lexington region on ESPN’s projections. That route would send them to Seattle first to face Gonzaga (nearly a home game for the Zags), then potentially earn a rematch with 3-seed Washington. The Orange beat the Huskies in the Final Four last year, for those who may have forgotten.
Getting out of Seattle (ask Sean for advice on how to do so) would likely pit them against either Maryland or Tennessee. SU beat the Lady Vols in the 2016 Elite 8.
Hopefully we’re watching, or at least following along, this evening. With the SU men relegated to the NIT, the women’s team is our chance to still catch some Orange-tinged NCAA Tournament action.
