Syracuse softball riding two-game winning streak before FAU Tournament

SU’s 3-2 after opening weekend action.

Syracuse Orange softball kicked off the 2017 campaign over the weekend at the Red and Black Showcase down in Athens, Ga. (home of the Georgia Bulldogs). Playing five games during the event, SU managed to win three — one vs. East Carolina and two against Winthrop — despite dropping two to the hosts.

The wins over Winthrop to end the event have the Orange riding a two-game winning streak heading into this weekend’s competition: the FAU Showcase in Boca Raton, Fla.

Syracuse will face St. John’s first on Friday, then follow that up with Savannah State. They’ll play another doubleheader on Saturday, against Tulsa and Toledo, respectively.

Due to the weather in Syracuse, the Orange typically spend a whole lot of time away from home early in the season. That’s the case once again for 2017, as the team doesn’t play at home until March 22 vs. Niagara. Following the FAU Tournament, the next two weekends are also in Florida -- at the Citrus Classic (Orlando) and Under Armour Invitational (Tampa), respectively.

For those looking for a primer on how this season should go, Syracuse was picked to finish seventh out of the ACC’s 11 teams.

Senior Sydney O’Hara leads the team in batting average through five games, going 6-fo-15 from the plate, while scoring four runs as well. O’Hara has also appeared in three games as a pitcher, striking out 12 and tallying a save in 6.2 innings.

Freshman starter Alexa Romero has starred so far for SU. The Colorado native has a 2.38 ERA in 17.2 innings pitched over the course of three games. She’s 2-1 so far and has struck out 10 batters.

There’s currently a three-way tie for the team lead in home runs. Hannah Dossett, Faith Cain and Andrea Bombace all have one apiece. Dossett also leads the team in total bases (10). Dossett, Bombace and Alica Hansen share the team lead in RBIs with four apiece.

We’d be remiss to talk about the softball team and not mention “Gnate the Gnome.” The Daily Orange had a great story up yesterday about the unofficial mascot and his travels with the team. You can follow Gnate on Twitter at @_Gnate.

Good luck to the softball team this weekend when they head to Boca Raton.
