Player Breakdown:
With Syracuse returning zero scholarship tight ends next season, Hackett – along with Pierce – will have the opportunity to contribute immediately as a true freshman. In 10 games as a senior at Venice, Hackett caught 24 passes for 324 yards and four touchdowns, helping lead Venice to a 12-1 record and Class 7A regional title, according to MaxPreps.
Hackett is rated the No. 83 tight end by 247Sports. At Venice, his position coach was former Syracuse tight end Beckett Wales. Wales played at SU from 2010-2013 under ex-Syracuse head coaches Doug Marrone and Scott Shafer. Hackett will compete with Pierce for the starting tight end spot. Pierce, however, has the upper hand over Hackett as the JUCO transfer is already on campus and participating in winter strength training.
