The Syracuse Orange football program’s class of 2017 is finally signing on the dotted line. National Signing Day will welcome plenty of new players to the SU family, and we’re providing profiles for each and every commitment at TNIAAM. The latest signee is Michigan (then Syracuse area) product Eric Coley, whose dad is none other than Orange D-line coach Vinson Reynolds.
Hometown: Manlius, N.Y.
High School: Fayetteville-Manlius High School
Stats: 6'1", 185 pounds
Commitment Date: June 25, 2016
Ratings: Three stars from everyone except Rivals (two stars). What gives?
Other Offers: Rutgers, Bowling Green, Utah State, Toledo, Central Michigan and other assorted MAC schools.
Dino’s projected nickname: “Man of (La) Manlius”
Player Breakdown: Though Coley is the son of SU’s D-line coach, he won’t be playing directly under his father’s watch. That’s probably a plus for him, as he gets to grow and develop at his own pace at corner while Coach Reynolds continues developing the Orange line.
Coley shows off some speed and has an ability to get a hand on the football. Syracuse is very much in need of defensive backs in the short and long term, so there’s no counting out true freshmen playing once again this fall. If Coley or any of the other new additions can show an ability to adapt to the coverage scheme, they’ll probably see playing time. The Orange were gassed in far too many contests late last year, so an ability to rotate in fresh legs on defense will be critical.
