Syracuse Lacrosse: 2018 schedule shaping up

New, comments

With several weeks left to go before the Syracuse schedule is announced, the Orange already have a full plate.

If history is any indication, the Syracuse Orange men’s lacrosse schedule is not due out until about the second or third week of December. We do have a few dates in concrete right now including Hopkins, Hobart, and Cornell. The one big surprise right now is that for the first time since 1983 the Naval Academy will play a regular season game against ‘Cuse. While it has been over three decades since these two have squared off in the regular season, the last matchup came in the 2004 NCAA Championship game with SU taking title with a 14-13 win. That Championship game was the first I can remember watching and it got me hooked on college lacrosse.

Along with the Midshipmen, the Rutgers Scarlett Knights have also found a place on the 2018 slate. The two additions likely indicate that two 2017 opponents are now off of the board for the 2018 schedule. Take a look below at what we have so far and the potential dates of ACC opponents and those likely to be on the calendar.

Currently scheduled games are bolded and possible ACC dates are in italics

Sunday, January 28 – Scrimmage vs. Hofstra

Saturday, February 10

Saturday, February 17

Saturday, February 24

Saturday, March 3 – Virginia Cavaliers – Charlottesville, VA

Saturday, March 10 – Johns Hopkins Blue Jays – Carrier Dome

Saturday, March 18 – Rutgers Scarlet Knights – Piscataway, NJ

Saturday, March 24 – Duke Blue Devils – Durham, NC

Saturday, March 31 – Notre Dame Fighting Irish – Carrier Dome

Tuesday, April 3 – Hobart Statesmen – Carrier Dome

Saturday, April 7 – likely no game

Tuesday, April 10 – Cornell Big Red – Ithaca, NY

Saturday, April 14 – North Carolina Tar Heels – Carrier Dome

Saturday, April 21 – Navy Midshipmen – Carrier Dome

April 27-29 – ACC Tournament

Saturday, May 5 – Colgate Raiders – Carrier Dome

May 12-13 – NCAA 1st Round

In the above, it is assumed that we will see a bye on Saturday, April 7 in between midweek games, something that has been the case in the recent past.

That leaves us with five opponents from last year, Siena, Albany, Army, St. John’s, and Binghamton, and three open dates.

The Red Storm and SU have traditionally played on the second weekend in March. However, due to the schedule change with Johns Hopkins, that weekend is now occupied with Rutgers slipping into the usual Hopkins weekend. Assuming that the ACC schedule is kept the same, we are left with only the opening three weekends. St. John’s and Siena both have a game scheduled for February 24 and the Saints are also busy on February 17, so if ‘Cuse is going to schedule Albany, Siena, and St. John’s then Siena would have to be the first weekend, St. John’s the second and Albany the third. Given that I see opener against Siena continued over an opener against St. John’s, the other option is to continue the series with Army on that third weekend and drop the Red Storm from the 2018 slate. Of course considering that the current schedule is pretty loaded, maybe SU goes with a Siena, Albany, and Binghamton lineup and leaves out St. John’s and Army, two teams that have given the Orange trouble in recent years.

We still have a few weeks left but in any event this is looking like a very fun schedule for fans.
