In week 10, Syracuse Orange wide receiver Steve Ishmael received ACC honors for a career-high performance. In a loss to Florida State, the senior had 12 catches for 143 yards and a score. The yardage mark was his best ever, though the 12 catches fell short of his career-high of 14 (set earlier this year).
On Saturday, Ishmael went and topped that game — again, despite a defeat. He tied a career-high with 14 catches and squeezed past last week’s yardage mark by two. He also had another touchdown, giving him six on the season.
What other notable record book happenings occurred this weekend? A quick rundown below.
Passing
Zack Mahoney actually put up the 11th-highest passing yardage mark in school history vs. Wake Forest, amassing 384 yards on 33 completions. He also moved into a sort of elite club for the school, becoming just the 19th player to throw for 1,900 yards in their career. The next plateau is 2,000 yards, which just 15 Orange passers have ever pulled off.
Mahoney also threw for three touchdowns, giving him 18 at Syracuse. That’s actually just one off a tie for 10th all-time. As one guy who understands strange SU quarterback legacies said on Twitter yesterday, “The Officer” may just end up with the weirdest one of all.
Receiving
As mentioned, it was a career day for Ishmael -- though there were more accomplishments in there as well.
The Orange senior managed to top the 200-catch mark and now sits second all-time in school history with 206. Ervin Philips sits just seven in front of him (at 213), which should make for some interesting jostling in the school record book over the season’s final couple weeks.
Speaking of Philips, he had six catches for 93 yards of his own, which moved him up to eighth on the career yardage list, with 1,991. With 826 yards on the season, he’s also within shouting distance of one of the top 10 outputs in school history there, too.
After his 145-yard performance, Ishmael now has 1,131 yards on the year -- which ties Marvin Harrison for the second highest total in school history. He’d need 351 yards in the next two (or three) weeks to tie Amba Etta-Tawo’s mark set last year. Ish’s career yardage mark of 2,675 is now second all-time as well -- just 53 behind Harrison. His 17 receiving touchdowns are tied for the fifth-most in school history with Tommy Kane. Rob Moore holds that mark with 22.
Kicking
It was another rough day for Cole Murphy, who went 2-of-4 on three-point tries. However, the two makes were notable from both a career and season standpoint. His 19 field goals (on 25 tries) this year are now the all-time mark, surpassing the previous high set of 18 by both Gary Anderson (1981) and Ross Krautman (2010). The second make also gave him 58 on his career, which is now the most in school history. John Biskup previously held the record.
