Things started rough, but then turned around in a hurry.

My goodness, what a half…

The Syracuse Orange are up 14 over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons coming out of their highest scoring half of the season (38 points so far). The two teams have combined for over 700 yards of offense and Eric Dungey hasn’t played a down. Happened just like we all thought, right?

The story so far:

Zack Mahoney

The senior is tearing up throwing for nearly 300 yards and three touchdowns on 35 attempts while filling in for the injured Dungey. Both of his top targets Steve Ishmael and Ervin Philips have over 80 yards receiving and Ravian Pierce has two touchdown receptions. Pitt Part II anyone?

Dontae Strickland/Moe Neal

The two ate their Wheaties this morning combining for over 160 yards from scrimmage. The offensive line has been playing well opening holes and both backs have taken advantage. As the Orange look to close this one out in the fourth, hopefully the two keep up the pace on the ground.

The Defense:

That first quarter was hard to watch, John Wolford is good, but not that good. Miscommunication and poor zone awareness contributed to three first quarter touchdowns. It seems coach Ward was able to settle his guys by the beginning of the second as defense didn’t allow a second quarter touchdowns.

Heading into the second half, I’m hoping to see more of the same. Great offense and solid defense. Mahoney is hot and the defense seems to have found their stride, hopefully the Orange can ride that wave into another home victory.
