Syracuse stresses Orange Madness will be all about basketball this year

Sorry Hilby, we won’t need your services this year

NCAA Basketball: Georgia Tech at Syracuse Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports

For the last few years, the Syracuse Orange (men’s and women’s) basketball teams have been introduced to fans as part of the annual Orange Madness event in the Carrier Dome. We’ve seen elaborate Boeheim entrances, an odd variety of musical performances and some sloppy scrimmages.

Well this year’s going to be different and not exactly in the way John suggested this summer. Instead of all the extras, the 2017 version of Orange Madness will be called Basketball Fan Appreciation Weekend. It will feature an intra-squad scrimmage for the men on Friday October 20. The Syracuse women will host a “Hoops-n-Scoops” ice cream social/open practice on Sunday October 22.

The men’s scrimmage will be Orange vs White (sorry Platinum) and it will allow current SU students to enjoy the best seats in the house. This is a good way to help raise student excitement for the upcoming season and raise the energy in the Dome for the event. The press release notes that post-scrimmage player and coach interactions will be available, but Selfie Stations have not yet been confirmed.

The women’s event will also be held at the Dome. Fans are being asked to RSVP for that event so Coach Q knows how much ice cream he needs to bring. We are waiting to find out if former Orange star Scoop Jardine will be dishing at the Dome.

Maybe next year we will see the women get the Dome for an evening scrimmage while the men host a “Brunch with Boeheim” event (I’ll have the 2-3 omelet). I’m sure that fans of Hilby will be disappointed, but they can still catch him at the Maryland Renaissance Fair.
