Former Syracuse safety Shamarko Thomas signs with Buffalo Bills

NFL: AFC Divisional-Pittsburgh Steelers at Denver Broncos Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Going into Tuesday, the list of former Syracuse Orange football players on active NFL rosters numbered just six. Now, we can make that seven.

The Buffalo Bills have signed former SU safety Shamarko Thomas (#SHAMARKO, obviously) to their roster to help out in the secondary. After second-string free safety Colt Anderson was injured, the team needed to add someone else in the defensive backfield. They opted for Thomas, who last played for the Pittsburgh Steelers last season. Backup strong safety Robert Blanton was also released to accommodate the move, which should open the position up for Thomas at SS.

#SHAMARKO played in just eight games in Pittsburgh last year, notching seven tackles. The high-water mark in his career was his rookie season in 2013. That year, he recorded 29 tackles in 15 games. He was in the New York Jets’ camp this offseason, but missed the final cut.

Congrats to #SHAMARKO on the new opportunity. We’ll hopefully see you on the field for Buffalo this coming weekend, when the Bills take on the Cincinnati Bengals (in Cincinnati).
