The orange chrome facemask will return for the Syracuse Orange football team this weekend when the head south to face the Miami Hurricanes. But the defining features of this week’s uniform set? All white... plus “Game of Thrones” references.
Dino’s long been noted for being a big GoT fan, so the “Winter is coming” usage should not surprise in the least. The video above uses Ramin Djawadi’s “Light of the Seven,” direct from the show’s soundtrack. Both the tweet and the video say “winter is coming.” The cinematic aspects are pretty excellent -- and a nice follow-up to the expertly produced Clemson game recap that appeared this week.
While Syracuse has worn the all-whites before, there are some interesting new folds to this look for Saturday. The orange chrome facemask, last seen against LSU, is such a fantastic look. And the eagle-eyed among us probably noticed the block-S thigh pads as well.
Syracuse hasn’t worn the all-whites since last year’s win over Boston College -- which, coincidentally, was also the eighth game of that season (like this Miami game is now). The Orange are 3-2 in all-white, with wins over BC (2016), Wake Forest (2014) and Central Michigan (2014), plus losses to Clemson (2014) and Virginia (2015). After the Miami game, it’ll be tied for the most-used combo in this uni set (six times) along with the traditional orange-blue-orange.
SU is 4-5 with the white helmets since 2014, and 0-1 this season. They’re 4-11 with the white jerseys, and 4-7 with the white pants.
Dino’s probably been waiting for the perfect time to add “Game of Thrones” to the uniform unveil, and this seems like a good a time as any. It’s worth noting, however, that if current forecasts keep up, these unis may not be white for very long. It’s projected to rain on Saturday right now.
