Syracuse football 2017 midseason awards: Defensive MVP

We’re halfway through. Who’s our most important defender so far?

NCAA Football: Pittsburgh at Syracuse Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

The Syracuse Orange defense has improved considerably year over year. So rather than being bummed about the effort we’ve seen so far, we’re actually pleased. It’s been a while!

Below, we log our votes for SU’s defense MVP at the 2017 season’s halfway point. There are a couple obvious answers, but we invite you to weigh in as well and maybe even propose a different option, too.

Kevin Wall

Parris Bennett, linebacker

My defensive MVP is Parris Bennett. He’s been all over the field each week making plays and helping lead an improved Orange defense.

Michael Lehr

Parris Bennett, linebacker

How can you not go with Bennett? Coming up on 60 tackles, and he's not just racking them up against poor teams. The only reason SU was even in the game with LSU was that Bennett was all over the field. He had 12 tackles there, and hasn't been lower than that since. Bennett is a leader that doesn't have to speak up the same way Zaire Franklin does, he leads by action.

John Cassillo

Christopher Fredrick, cornerback

I’m fine with picking Bennett or Zaire Franklin. But changing it up a bit, why not make the case for Fredrick? In his second year in the lineup, he’s quickly risten to the occasion as an impact corner, and over time has started actively altering offensive game plans. His three pass breakups and one interception hardly tell the story. We know the front seven’s improved, but the secondary has seen its own play lifted, in part due to the presence Fredrick has had out there.

Those are our picks, but what about yours? Bennett may seem like an obvious choice, but plenty more options available as well. If you don’t see yours here, comment your own below.
