Syracuse QB commit Tommy DeVito will sign with Orange at ESPN

This was unexpected, but still very welcome.

DeVito Throne

When we were previewing what to expect for the Syracuse Orange’s National Signing Day, we included an off-hand mention of some fanfare around Tommy DeVito. A school gym ceremony, cool video clip from Syracuse -- something along those lines.

Nope. Ends up the 4-star QB commit and face of the class of 2017 will be signing his National Letter of Intent on one ESPN’s networks (probably ESPNU?) come Wednesday at 1:45 p.m. ET.

As Syracuse.com also reports, he’ll be taking over Syracuse.com’s Snapchat feed as well that day, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. ET. You can follow along with @syracusedotcom if you happen to be one of those kookie millennials on the ol’ chat snap. I can only imagine what 17-year old me would’ve done with control over a news outlet’s official social media account credentials. It probably would’ve looked a lot like my MySpace page did at the time.

Obviously this is a huge deal for the program, and yet another instance of Dino Babers’s likability and John Wildhack’s former employment at ESPN paying off big-time.

We’ve said it before, and will say it again: these opportunities for Babers, players and commits to be on ESPN are far more valuable than any 20-point loss to a blueblood program can provide.

DeVito’s on campus this weekend with a long list of other Orange commits before they officially sign on the dotted line come Wednesday. Among the others at SU: Russell Thompson-Bishop, Cameron Jordan, Nykeim Johnson, Sharod Johnson, Dakota Davis, Aaron Hackett, Curtis Harper, Ifeatu Melifonwu and Brandon Berry.

The countdown to National Signing Day is on. Keep it here for everything you want/need to know about the soon-to-be Orange signees.
