Boston College Blog: BC Interruption
Rivalry: 45-25, Syracuse
Current Streak: 1, Boston College
First Meeting: In January of 1959, Syracuse lost its first of three consecutive games to BC, 78-71. Pete Chudy led SU with 13 points and Jon Cincebox also grabbed 19 rebounds. Still, it wasn’t enough to stop the Eagles’ offense that day during a lackluster 14-9 Orangemen season.
Last Meeting: Boston College played out of their minds en route to a 96-81 win on New Year’s Day this year. If there was any hope for Syracuse during ACC play, it appeared to be shot down right in the opener. While we beat BC on a regular basis, they also have a habit of pissing us off.
Head Coaches: SU: Jim Boeheim (41st Year, 995-349); Boston College: Jim Christian (3rd Year, 29-52)
Head Coach Bio: Christian played at Boston University and Rhode Island in the 1980s, before eventually working his way up to the Kent State head coaching gig in 2002-03. He turned the Golden Flashes into a perennial MAC power and a two-time NCAA Tournament team.
Following his time at Kent State, he was hired by TCU, but struggled for four years from 2008 through 2012. He headed back to the MAC afterward, coaching Ohio to two 20-win seasons (including one NIT trip), then took the Boston College job. He’s had a rough go with the Eagles, but things might be turning around this year.
Last Year: Last year was hot garbage in Chestnut Hill. BC went 7-25 and 0-18 in the ACC. There wasn’t a damn thing watchable about last season for the Eagles.
Last Game: Boston College picked up their second ACC win of the season, this time against NC State. Jerome Robinson and Ky Bowman led the way, combining for 45 points and guiding another strong shooting day for three.
"Fear Me, I've Killed Hundreds of Timelords": Yeah, Bowman and Robinson are terrifying. They combined for 52 points the last time they faced Syracuse, and on the year, they’re teaming up for 34 points per game. In ACC play, their output’s even increased — despite the step-up in competition. Just guard them, please, Syracuse.
If Syracuse Wins: There’s still a long road ahead, but at least we can shove this nightmare thing where BC beats us back in the closet where it belongs. Also, every win matters at this point.
If Syracuse Loses: Expect a spring practice countdown on the front page by Saturday night.
Fun Fact No. 1: Boston College has never been to the Final Four. That’s not fun for them, but it’s worth noting just the same.
Fun Fact No. 2: These teams were once in the opposite divisions of the Big East, that time it tried divisions for a few years. Boston College was in the Big East East, and Syracuse was in the Big East West. In 2001, they were arguably the best teams in those respective divisions. Pitt robbed us all of a Big East Tournament Final matchup between BC and SU, beating the Orangemen 55-54 in the semis.
