The Syracuse Orange (4-1-1) was looking to move on from their first loss of the season this past Friday, and they most certainly did when they faced Cornell (2-1-0) Sunday afternoon in Ithaca, New York.
Up until the first goal was scored, the teams traded possessions pretty frequently, due to both fouls and timely steals by the defenses. The Orange broke through in the 42nd minute when senior forward Stephanie Skilton booted the ball from the top of the penalty box area over goalkeeper Kelsey Tierney’s head into the opposite corner of the net.
During the second half of play, the Big Red tied the game up at one with a header that found Tess Pullano who collected it and scored. As neither side could muster any more offense, the match was headed to overtime.
Syracuse was in control of the ball for the entirety of the four-plus minutes that it took Skilton to find the back of the net for the second time. Patience was a virtue for her as her first attempt was blocked. It was her second effort that sent the Orange out with the victory.
